Puppy Dog Hotel
The UK’s premier home boarding, training and visiting home pet care services.
About Us
After spending many years helping train and socialise UK Assistance Dogs and caring for family, friends and neighbours dogs we decided to open Puppy Dog Hotel and duly applied for our boarding licence. Having met all the terms, conditions, regulations and vet checks required we were licensed by the local authority to open Puppy Dog Hotel. We opened the business on the 1st April 2008 and our very first guest arrived from the Docklands in London. From day one Puppy Dog Hotel has built a reputation year on year for providing love, care and first class services for client’s dogs, puppies and pets.
Our clients range from Lancashire to Devon and we have also had several clients from the U.S.A and Europe whose work required them to visit the UK for prolonged periods of time. Many of the guests we have return year after year for their holidays since they first visited us as puppies and of course have become part of our extended family too, we are always pleased to hear the owners say how excited their dogs get when they drive into our street and pull them to our door! We could not ask for a better reference.
During October 2018 the laws on looking after, caring for or breeding most domesticated pets (Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, Horses etc) changed to The Animal Activities Licence 2018. This means that anyone offering pet services as a business in England now needs to be licensed, for dogs/puppies this covers overnight boarding, day care and breeding. There are also rules of dog walking etc. Under the new licence the local authority/DEFRA have introduced a Star Rating System for each business. Following our local authority/DEFRA inspection Puppy Dog Hotel has been awarded the highest possible FIVE STAR rating. It is a criminal offence for clients to use a pet business service for their dog/puppy that has not been licensed. Clients should carefully check their home/pet insurance as the liability section may not cover you if you use a business that is not licensed accordingly, this means that you may be liable for any costs in the event that your dog/puppy causes any injury/damage to third parties whilst not in your care. Puppy Dog Hotel has always been fully licensed and we are insured. We strongly recommend that you read our Q&A Page which will offer helpful tips and advice on selecting a home boarding service and may save you and your dog much heartache.
We have been involved with dogs and puppies for over thirty five years, in addition we have as a family socialised and provided the initial training and socialisation for puppies for a major UK Assistance Dogs charity for over twenty years.
We took the puppies full time into our home at a young age, normally from 10-12 weeks. We also have older puppies up to 5-6 months of age which were donated or rescued by the UK Assistance Dog charity.
The puppies would normally stay with us for up to twelve months at which point they would return to the charity HQ for addition sound training. We have never charged any of the charities we help and never will, we think they all do a fantastic job.
During the period the UK Assistance puppy was staying with us we would provide the following training and socialisation:
Toileting on command (verbal command), Heel work (incorporates sitting when stopping and sitting if lead is accidentally dropped), Sitting (Verbal and/or hand command), Lay Down (Verbal and/or hand command), Waiting for feed (Verbal and/or hand command), Releasing Items (Verbal command) , Stay (Verbal and/or hand command), Fetch (Verbal command), Come/Re-call (Whistle, Verbal and/or hand command), Not Jumping Up, Sitting at kerb, Grooming, Vet Checks, Socialising People/Children, Socialising Other pets, Travel in Car/Public Transport, Visiting Shops, association with everyday noises (Washing machine, hoovers, traffic etc...)
Reacting to every day sounds within the home.*
*Not Smoke Detector Alarms.
We have also taken UK Assistance Dog puppies for a few weeks to ‘Iron out’ small problems that their regular full time socialisers were having problems with. The pass rate is generally 1 in 5 due to the extremely high level required. To date all our full term puppies passed and went on to become fully qualified Registered UK Assistance Dogs helping their recipients to lead an easier happier life!
Puppy Dog Hotel is also proud to help, donate and offer our services free of charge to some of the UK’s leading national charities. To read more about these charities the wonderful work they do and how you may be able to get involved please look at our Charities Page.
The methods we use to train both UK Assistance Dogs puppies and Private Clients Dogs and Puppies are to keep lessons fun and playful with cheerful excited voice and big cuddles along with a tasty treat now and again as a reward. This keeps the Dog or Puppy keen to learn and pleased whilst enjoying the playful fun of a new game. Dogs and Puppies are trained little and often and should never be forced to continue with training if they are becoming tired, remember to allow them their own space and time. Most of all be patient, many things are new to a young dog or puppy. The puppy’s training all revolves around aspects of ending up with a well-balanced and happy dog. We train the puppies to respond to Voice Commands, Hand Signals & a Professional Dog Whistle of a particular pitch, each have their benefits. An interesting fact: The oldest dog we have trained for a client was eleven years old!!!
Due to our long experience and knowledge on all aspects of care, diet and training we are able to offer advice on all aspects of training and behaviour for dogs and puppies, whether this be via a residential visit to the Puppy Dog Hotel or a 1 to 1 visit at your home, we have excellent knowledge on the general well-being and health of dogs and puppies and often advise clients accordingly. This knowledge also enables us to advise clients on a dog or puppies dietary and nutrient needs including supplements and weight loss programs, feeding young dogs or puppies and feeding requirements for older dogs, development of skeletal and muscular structures of young dogs and puppies.
In addition to this we offer a various range of services for your dog or puppy to stay with us at the Puppy Dog Hotel. Emergency First Aid Course:
We have attended and completed an Emergency First Aid course for Dogs. This involves such issues as Resuscitation, Road Traffic Accidents, Fractures, Wound dressing, and Choking etc. Although we hope we never need to use these skills it is obviously beneficial to know how to do so correctly should the need arise.
